{"id":7846,"date":"2013-05-24T03:47:25","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T03:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/testpreparations.com\/help\/?p=3419"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:27:01","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:27:01","slug":"persuasive-writing-on-the-sat-and-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2013\/05\/24\/persuasive-writing-on-the-sat-and-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Persuasive Writing on the SAT and ACT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:\u00a0 Writing for a Purpose<\/strong><br \/>\nIn persuasive writing, the purpose is to influence an audience.\u00a0 Essay prompts that direct students to write to persuade will state the both the issue and the audience.\u00a0 For those essays, it is important to stay focused, analyze the issue, and analyze the audience.\u00a0 Usually, the test gives a number of alternatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is the Issue?<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the prompts, students may be asked to defend or oppose a position or an action.\u00a0 Perhaps the issue is defending a longer school year.\u00a0 Think of all the advantages to students and teachers of having a longer school year, if the position chosen is to write about defending it.\u00a0 Jot down some of those ideas before writing the paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who Is the Audience?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe writing prompt will clearly state who the audience is for the argument.\u00a0 If the audience consists of members of the school board, use arguments and examples that will appeal to them, as business people, and members of the community.\u00a0 For example, one of the advantages of having a longer school year might be to have a better educated workforce.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0If the intended audience were fellow students, in a letter to the editor of the school paper, one strategy might be to describe the advantage to students of taking the time to study a subject in depth and to explore alternatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stay Focused<\/strong><br \/>\nAs with any essay portion on a standardized test, stay focused and avoid the temptation to stray off track.\u00a0 While normal essay writing instructions often ask students to argue the opposite point of view , the essay portion of the standardized test is not a normal essay.\u00a0 There isn&#8217;t enough time to develop opposing points of view.\u00a0 The purpose of the essay portion of the SAT and ACT is to show how well writers can stay focused, choose one point of view, and follow it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reviewing and Proofreading<\/strong><br \/>\nThe last five minutes or so of allotted writing time can be used for reviewing and proofreading.\u00a0 For some students, that might mean neat correction of spelling errors.\u00a0 Others may use the time to read the paper over and add any quick transitions.
