{"id":7854,"date":"2014-07-05T00:10:02","date_gmt":"2014-07-05T00:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/testpreparations.com\/help\/?p=3588"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:25:28","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:25:28","slug":"review-of-nonstandard-english-idiom-errors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2014\/07\/05\/review-of-nonstandard-english-idiom-errors\/","title":{"rendered":"Review of Nonstandard English:  Idiom Errors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Overview:\u00a0 What Do the SAT and ACT Test in English Grammar?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The SAT and ACT test for formal, academic, standard English, which is not necessarily the same way that students speak or write.\u00a0 Many errors are especially insidious because the correct form and the incorrect form are very close.\u00a0 However, some idiom errors involve words that actually mean the opposite from each other.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>What Is the Proper Form of the Verb?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The verb form <strong>doesn&#8217;t<\/strong> is used with third-person singular subjects, such as in the sentence &#8220;He doesn&#8217;t want to take the test this month.&#8221;\u00a0 The verb form <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> is used with all other subjects, but never when the subject is in the third person singular.\u00a0 Similarly, the verbs <strong>done<\/strong> and <strong>seen<\/strong> are used with helping verbs, such as had, has, or have, never alone.\u00a0 When<strong> gone<\/strong> is used as a verb, it is also used with a helping verb.\u00a0 However, the verb <strong>went<\/strong> is the past tense of to go, and is not used with a helping verb.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>What about Lie and Lay?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Correct usage of the verbs<strong> lie<\/strong> and<strong> lay<\/strong> depend on what is doing the action.\u00a0 The verb lie, with parts lying, lay, and lain, means &#8220;to recline.&#8221;\u00a0 It is not followed by a direct object, but often by an adverb or adverb phrase, telling just where someone or something is reclining.\u00a0 The verb <strong>lay<\/strong>, with parts laying, laid, and laid, means &#8220;to put (something) down.&#8221;\u00a0 It is followed by a direct object, such as &#8220;Lay the plates on the table.&#8221;\u00a0 The verbs <strong>set<\/strong> and <strong>sit<\/strong> follow similar patterns, as sit is never followed by a direct object, but set is.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>What about Homonyms?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Homonyms can be especially troublesome, as they are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently.\u00a0 For example, <strong>their<\/strong> is a possessive pronoun, such as &#8220;their books,&#8221;<strong> there<\/strong> is an adverb referring to place, and <strong>they&#8217;re<\/strong> is a contraction of they are.\u00a0 The word <strong>too<\/strong> means the same as also,<strong> two<\/strong> is a number, and <strong>to<\/strong> is a preposition.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>What Word Pairs Mean the Opposite of Each Other?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The words t<strong>ake<\/strong> and <strong>bring<\/strong> are not synonyms.\u00a0 Bring means to carry from a distant place to a nearer one, while take means from a near place to a distant place.\u00a0 Similarly,<strong> learn<\/strong> and <strong>teach<\/strong> are not synonyms.\u00a0 To learn is to get knowledge, while to teach is to give knowledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Do you need to know more about how test questions on the SAT or ACT are scored? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.testpreparations.com\/sat-prep\/\">Learn more<\/a> about how we are assisting thousands of students each academic year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Test Prep Academy<\/strong><\/span> is the premier test prep and private tutoring company for college-bound students.
