{"id":8851,"date":"2016-03-09T05:11:58","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T05:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=8851"},"modified":"2016-03-10T16:11:41","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T16:11:41","slug":"english-review-of-plurals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2016\/03\/09\/english-review-of-plurals\/","title":{"rendered":"English Review of Plurals"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>In order to form a plural noun from a singular noun, grammatical rules are followed.\u00a0 The way the plural is formed often depends on the way the singular noun is spelled, whether it ends in a consonant or a vowel.<\/p>\n<h3>Regular Plurals<\/h3>\n<p>Many nouns form plurals by adding \u2013s to the singular form.\u00a0 For example, the plural of the word <strong>bank<\/strong> is <strong>banks<\/strong>, the plural of <strong>letter<\/strong> is <strong>letters<\/strong>, and so on.\u00a0 Some nouns that end in the letter o preceded by a vowel, such as <strong>radio<\/strong>, <strong>studio<\/strong>, and <strong>patio<\/strong> also form plurals by merely adding \u2013s, such as <strong>radios<\/strong>, <strong>studios<\/strong>, and <strong>patios<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Plurals with an Extra Syllable<\/h3>\n<p>Nouns form plurals ending in \u2013es if the singular noun ends in the letter s, sh, ch, x, or z.\u00a0 The plural adds an extra syllable to the word.\u00a0 For example, <strong>boss<\/strong> becomes <strong>bosses<\/strong>, <strong>wish<\/strong> becomes<strong> wishes<\/strong>, <strong>church<\/strong> becomes <strong>churches<\/strong>, <strong>hoax<\/strong> becomes<strong> hoaxes<\/strong>, and <strong>waltz<\/strong> becomes <strong>waltzes<\/strong>.\u00a0 If the singular noun ends in the letter o preceded by a consonant, such as<strong> hero<\/strong> or <strong>veto<\/strong>, the plural form ends in \u2013es, but the singular noun already has more than one syllable, such as <strong>heroes<\/strong> or <strong>vetoes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/03\/plurals-ending-in-es.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/03\/plurals-ending-in-es.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Plurals that Change Spelling<\/h3>\n<p>Some plurals have a different spelling than the singular noun form.\u00a0 Some singular nouns that end in \u2013f or \u2013fe change to \u2013v and add \u2013es to form the plural.\u00a0 For example, <strong>calf<\/strong> becomes <strong>calves<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0knife<\/strong> becomes<strong> knives<\/strong>, <strong>leaf<\/strong> becomes <strong>leaves<\/strong>, and <strong>thief<\/strong> becomes <strong>thieves<\/strong>.\u00a0 Nouns that end in \u2013y preceded by a consonant change the y to i and add es, so that <strong>baby<\/strong> becomes <strong>babies<\/strong>, <strong>family<\/strong> becomes <strong>families<\/strong>, and <strong>party<\/strong> becomes <strong>parties<\/strong>.\u00a0 Still other nouns change their spelling entirely so <strong>foot<\/strong> becomes<strong> feet<\/strong>, <strong>tooth<\/strong> becomes<strong> teeth<\/strong>, <strong>man<\/strong> becomes <strong>men<\/strong>, <strong>woman<\/strong> becomes <strong>women<\/strong>, and <strong>mouse<\/strong> becomes <strong>mice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>Plurals That Do Not Change<a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/03\/irregular-plural-nouns.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/03\/irregular-plural-nouns.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Some nouns are the same whether they are singular or plural.\u00a0 For example, one sheep becomes many sheep, one moose becomes more than one moose, one deer becomes a herd of deer, one salmon spawns a stream full of salmon, and one aircraft becomes a flock of aircraft.\u00a0 Similarly, the words scissors, pants, and scales are always plural.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/03\/plural-nouns-that-stay-the-same.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/03\/plural-nouns-that-stay-the-same.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/english-tutors\/\">English tutoring services<\/a>?
