{"id":8911,"date":"2016-04-16T18:18:33","date_gmt":"2016-04-16T18:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=8911"},"modified":"2016-04-18T15:37:29","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T15:37:29","slug":"english-review-of-prepositions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2016\/04\/16\/english-review-of-prepositions\/","title":{"rendered":"English Review of Prepositions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>A preposition is a part of speech that connects a noun or pronoun with a relationship in space, location, or time.\u00a0 Some prepositions such as <strong>of<\/strong>, <strong>for<\/strong>, <strong>to<\/strong>, <strong>in<\/strong>, <strong>or<\/strong>, and <strong>on<\/strong> are the most common words in the English language.\u00a0 When a preposition is used to describe the relationship, the noun becomes its object.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/04\/prepositions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/04\/prepositions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Relationships in Space and Location<\/h3>\n<p>One of the ways that prepositions are used are to show relationships in space and location.\u00a0 For example, in the sentence <strong>She works at the store<\/strong>, <strong>at<\/strong> shows the relationship between the subject of the sentence and the location where she works.\u00a0 Similarly, <strong>The books are on the table<\/strong>, <strong>on<\/strong> shows the relationship between the books and the table.\u00a0 If he walked to the desk, the preposition <strong>to<\/strong> shows the direction where the subject walked.<\/p>\n<h3>Relationships in Time<\/h3>\n<p>Prepositions also show relationships in time.\u00a0 In the sentence, <strong>The class begins at 8:00<\/strong>, <strong>at<\/strong> shows the relationship between the class and when it begins. \u00a0\u00a0However, in the sentence, <strong>The math class is in the morning<\/strong>, the time is not specific, so the preposition <strong>in<\/strong> is used to show a relationship in time.\u00a0 The sentence <strong>The meeting is on Tuesday at 3:00<\/strong>, shows two time relationships <strong>on<\/strong> for the day of the meeting and <strong>at<\/strong> for the specific time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/04\/prepositions-of-time.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/04\/prepositions-of-time.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Commonly Confused Prepositions<\/h3>\n<p>Some prepositions are often confused.\u00a0 For example, the preposition <strong>among<\/strong> refers to more than two, while the preposition <strong>between<\/strong> refers to two.\u00a0 The balloons were divided among team members, but the balloons were divided between the two of them.\u00a0 The preposition <strong>beside<\/strong> refers to at the side of, while the preposition <strong>besides<\/strong> refers to in addition to, so that I walk beside the river, but What class are you taking besides English?\u00a0 If someone walks in a garden, they are walking within the garden, but if they walk into a garden, they are walking from outside into the entrance.<\/p>\n<h3>Unnecessary Prepositions<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes extra prepositions are used in a sentence, but they are unnecessary and add nothing to the meaning of the sentence.\u00a0 They can be cut.\u00a0 In the sentence, She met up with her friend at the mall, she already met her friend, so the prepositions <strong>up<\/strong> and <strong>with<\/strong> can be deleted.\u00a0 In the sentence, Where did they go to?\u00a0 the preposition <strong>to<\/strong> is unnecessary and can be deleted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/04\/unnecessary-prepositions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/04\/unnecessary-prepositions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/english-tutors\/\">English tutoring services<\/a>?
