{"id":8937,"date":"2016-05-04T04:06:50","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T04:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=8937"},"modified":"2016-05-14T03:54:57","modified_gmt":"2016-05-14T03:54:57","slug":"english-review-of-end-punctuation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2016\/05\/04\/english-review-of-end-punctuation\/","title":{"rendered":"English Review of End Punctuation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Complete sentences have end punctuation depending on their meaning.\u00a0 Most sentences have periods, but some have question marks, and others have exclamation points.<\/p>\n<h3>Types of Sentences<\/h3>\n<p>Generally, there are four types of sentences:\u00a0 declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory.\u00a0 Declarative sentences make a point or present facts or opinions.\u00a0 Interrogative sentences ask direct questions.\u00a0 Imperative sentences give orders or make requests.\u00a0 Exclamatory sentences create emphasis or present strong emotion.\u00a0 The type of punctuation used depends upon the type of sentence and what is being conveyed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/types-of-sentences.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/types-of-sentences.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Period<\/h3>\n<p>The period is the most common end mark.\u00a0 It is used at the end of a declarative sentence, and does not convey strong emotion.\u00a0 If a question is indirect, a period is also used.\u00a0 The sentence \u201cShe asked why the door was left open\u201d would end with a period if it stood alone. \u00a0Periods are also used after abbreviations that stand for single words, such as the months, days of the week, or words such as Inc., Co., or Ltd. A period is used as a decimal point before a decimal, as in 3.1416 or .005.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0However, when an abbreviation with a period ends a sentence, only one period is necessary to end the sentence.\u00a0 The library is open from 7 A.M. to 11 P.M.\u00a0 Send the letter to Horizon Air, Inc.<\/p>\n<h3>The Question Mark<\/h3>\n<p>Most interrogative sentences end with question marks, if the question is direct.\u00a0 Why was the door left open? \u00a0Where did you leave the book? Who is going on the bus? What is the meaning of this?\u00a0 When are you going on vacation?\u00a0 How will you know? \u00a0Also, if a direct question is in a quotation, the question mark is within the quotation marks.\u00a0 For example, Steve asked, \u201cHas anyone seen the movie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/end-punctuation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/end-punctuation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Exclamation Point<\/h3>\n<p>Imperative sentences that give strong orders or exclamatory sentences that present strong emotion end with exclamation points.\u00a0 Leave the room!\u00a0 Keep off the grass!\u00a0 Danger!\u00a0 Poison!
