{"id":8959,"date":"2016-05-28T17:47:32","date_gmt":"2016-05-28T17:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=8959"},"modified":"2016-05-31T12:49:43","modified_gmt":"2016-05-31T12:49:43","slug":"science-review-of-plant-propagation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2016\/05\/28\/science-review-of-plant-propagation\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Review of Plant Propagation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Not all flowering plants reproduce from seeds.\u00a0 Some plants reproduce by making exact copies of themselves, as plantlets, from stems, or from multiple roots.\u00a0 Many plants that have desirable traits can be propagated from cuttings or grafting rather than growing them from seed.\u00a0 Major crops are also domesticated.<\/p>\n<h3>Vegetative Reproduction by Plantlets<\/h3>\n<p>Plants that do not reproduce from seeds make exact copies of themselves.\u00a0 For example, the spider plant is a familiar houseplant that grows as an herb in tropical regions of Africa and also in Australia.\u00a0 It grows by producing plantlets on the end of its leaves.\u00a0 When those plantlets reach soil, they can root and grow into new plants that are identical to the parent plant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/spider-plant.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/spider-plant.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Vegetative Reproduction by Stolon<\/h3>\n<p>A stolon is a long stem that grows at the surface of the soil or just underneath the ground.\u00a0 For example, strawberry plants can reproduce from long stems called runners, because new roots can develop into new plants farther away from the original plant.\u00a0 Some species of bamboo produce a long underground branching root system that sends up entire plants through the soil. Bamboo grows rapidly, because new stalks are at their full diameter as soon as they break through to the surface of the soil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/strawberry-plant-with-stolons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/strawberry-plant-with-stolons.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Plant Propagation<\/h3>\n<p>In order to produce many exact copies of parent plants, new plants are not always grown from seeds.\u00a0 Many can develop from cuttings of parts of stems and leaves.\u00a0 Some plants root easily this way.\u00a0 Seedless varieties of plants, such as seedless grapes and oranges, can be propagated by grafting a piece of stem or bud onto another more established tree.\u00a0 The new plant can then grow independently from the mother plant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/plant-propagation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/05\/plant-propagation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Domesticated Crops<\/h3>\n<p>The earliest hunter-gatherers did not domesticate crops.\u00a0 They traveled widely to find food sources and gathered wild plants as they roamed.\u00a0 About 10,000 to 11, 500 BCE, groups of people in different parts of the world began to grow wild species of lentils, barley, and wheat and cultivate domesticated varieties.\u00a0 People began to stay in one place, gather in communities, and grow crops for food.\u00a0 Most of the world depends upon staple crops, such as rice, wheat, and corn, but many other types of plants are also cultivated for food.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/science-tutoring\/\">science tutoring services<\/a>?
