A sentence is a group of words that form a complete thought.\u00a0 There are different types of sentences depending on what they contain.<\/p>\n

Complete Sentence<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Students are often asked to write answers to essay questions in complete sentences.\u00a0 A complete sentence has a noun that acts as a subject, and a verb that is either an action or a state of being.\u00a0 Suppose students are reading a book chapter in chemistry about the periodic table.\u00a0 They are asked to use complete sentences to describe it.\u00a0 One student might write \u201cThe periodic table contains metals, nonmetals, and transition elements.\u201d\u00a0 Notice that the sentence has a subject and a verb.<\/p>\n

Phrases and Clauses<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Phrases cannot stand alone, because they do not contain a complete thought.\u00a0 If the phrase is the yellow cat, what is it doing?\u00a0 Is it sitting on the step, or is it chasing a squirrel? \u00a0Similarly, suppose the phrase is \u201cflying an airplane.\u201d\u00a0 Who is flying the airplane and where is it going?\u00a0 The answer might be different if the pilot is flying the airplane along the Polar Route, or the hijacker is flying the airplane into the desert.\u00a0 If the sentence isn\u2019t complete, there\u2019s not enough information.<\/p>\n

Kinds of Sentences<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sentences are classified based on the amount of information they contain.\u00a0 A simple sentence has only a noun and a verb, with one clause.\u00a0 \u201cThe cat ran across the backyard.\u201d\u00a0 The phrase \u201cacross the backyard\u201d describes one thing, where the cat ran.\u00a0 A compound sentence has two or more separate clauses, such as \u201cThe cat ran across the backyard, and the dog barked. \u201c\u00a0 Those clauses are joined by a conjunction, such as or, and, or but.\u00a0 A complex sentence has one relative clause, such as \u201cThe cat, which was carrying a squirrel in its mouth, ran across the backyard.\u201d\u00a0 A complex-compound sentence has at least one relative clause, as well as two separate clauses.\u00a0 \u201cThe dog, which was lying in the sun while gnawing a bone, barked; and the cat streaked across the backyard, when the car revved its engine.”<\/p>\n

Purposes of Sentences<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Declarative sentences tell a complete thought.\u00a0 The dog barked.\u00a0 The sun rose.\u00a0 The bell tolled.\u00a0 They end with a period, and are the most common types of sentences.\u00a0 Interrogative sentences ask questions, and end with question marks.\u00a0 Why is the sky blue?\u00a0 What is the weather like?\u00a0 Where are you going? \u00a0Exclamatory sentences show excitement, and end with exclamation points.\u00a0 That was the best movie of the year!\u00a0 I hate weeds!\u00a0 Spring is coming!\u00a0 Imperative sentences are commands, and usually omit the subject \u201cyou.\u201d\u00a0 Make it so.\u00a0 Drive on.<\/p>\n
