Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aberdeen Township District Curriculum

The curriculum in the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District is developed according to the guidelines set forth in the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Together, these documents establish a framework for student learning from preschool through to the 12th grade. Standards are in place for math, language arts, social studies, science, 21st Century life and careers, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, technology and world languages.

The district has developed a curriculum for health and physical education that fosters the emotional, physical and social development of its students. The elementary school curriculum focuses on wellness and what it means to take good care of one’s self. Chalk Talk: Why Daily Reading Is Important

With all the distractions of the Internet, social media and video games, it can be difficult to get your child to sit down with a good book and read for a few minutes. Obviously, the more your child reads the better at it they will become. But reading provides other benefits as well. Reading is a form of exercise for the brain. Reading strengthens the connections in our brains and even builds new ones. Children who often read exhibit far greater concentration than kids who don’t. As kids read more and more often, their ability to concentrate increases, which in turn improves their performance across the board in school. Nonfiction and fiction reading alike help children learn about other peoples and places, opens their minds to new ideas and gives them access to events that they might not otherwise have the chance to experience.
