Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ayer District Curriculum

The district has developed specific services for students in need and at-risk. Resources and support for curriculum research and development are provided. The student/staff ratio is kept to a minimum to ensure learning. Using the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework, designed to align with the Common Core State Standards, the district pushes for each student to be college and career ready. These standards are also tied to the MCAS Assessments to ensure that students achieve these learning goals.

To achieve this, the Ayer Shirley Regional School District utilizes the Language Arts and Literacy standards, which teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills across the disciplines–such as Science, History/Social Studies, and Technical Subjects. By integrating these skills throughout the curriculum, the district ensures that students are being taught literacy skills for each specific subject area, a skill that will definitely prepare students for college and the workplace.

Chalk Talk: Tackling Time-Management

Being able to manage time is not something that occurs naturally for everyone. For many, it is a skill that must be learned and perfected. However, how do you learn how to effectively manage time? For students, this question is crucial for success. In order to master time-management skills, your student could try one or all of the following – first, keep a calendar. This allows your student to visually see where all his or her time is being spent. If your student records all of his or her responsibilities, it will be more difficult to overbook time, allowing for more realistic time control.Overall, keep things simple. Make sure your student is only committing to activities, events, and projects that he or she can actually devote time for. Cut out the things that are less important. Learning and developing a new skill can be tricky at first. Over time, the results are definitely worth the effort.
