Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Beachwood District Curriculum
The high school math curriculum in Beachwood includes the option to study statistics and probability. Students learn how to calculate expected values and how to use those values for problem solving. Learners also gain the ability to use probability to evaluate the outcome of decisions. To interpret data, students explore the concepts of independence and conditional probability as well. The role of randomness is studied, specifically with regard to statistical experiments.
In physical education class, elementary aged students learn basic motor skills that are necessary to participate in activities that improve physical fitness. Students learn to kick and throw a ball with accuracy, balance on a beam and stretch in preparation for safely engaging in physical activities. These fine and gross motor skills, along with developing knowledge of strategy and tactics, allow children to play various team and individual games and sports. Students in middle school also focus on health-related issues.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Writing
As the Common Core State Standards are implemented nationwide, districts are integrating writing across the curriculum. The Common Core focuses on three primary kinds of writing: expository, narrative and persuasive. The purpose behind incorporating these writing styles across the curriculum is so children learn the various styles of writing and develop the skills needed to be successful writers in a variety of contexts. Students don’t just express opinions in writing in their language arts class. They also defend their positions when writing essays for social studies. Students in art class can offer critiques of their art or the art of others in critical reviews. Lab reports in science class require similarly well-developed writing skills. The point being, English language arts is not something that exists in a vacuum. Instead, students should be able to apply the knowledge and skills they learn in English class to the multitude of situations they encounter every day.
