Beacon District and Curriculum

The Beacon City School District is responsible for overseeing the public schools in the city of Beacon. The district is dedicated to providing an educational program where students meet and exceed educational standards. The goal of the district is to prepare students for the work force, further education and as a citizen in a multicultural world by providing an educational environment that encourages collaboration.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Beacon District Curriculum

The curriculum followed at all the public schools in Beacon conforms and meets the standards set by the New York State of Regents. In English and Language Arts, students focus on becoming fluent in the English language including reading, writing, listening and speaking. Through the use of reading comprehension and analysis tools, students learn to take what they have read in literature and texts and apply it to their writing skills in all academic courses.

By the end of High School students are expected to be able to write essays, research reports, and creative writing assignments using well developed grammatical and expository skills. In Math, students are guided through an in depth learning process that is focused on learning computation skills, Algebra, Geometry, statistics and probability. All graduating High School students are required to pass Regents exams in Math, Science, English, Global History, and United States History.

Keeping Informed: Recent Beacon Educational News

  • Board Docs - The Board of Education for the Beacon City School District is becoming technologically advanced with the use of Board Docs. All documents such as Board agendas can now be found online at the school district site under the heading Board Docs.
  • Bowling Night Fundraisers - The fifth grade class at Glenham Elementary School in the Beacon City School District held a bowling night as a fundraiser for class events. The successful fundraiser which was open to the public was held at the Southern Dutchess Bowl on Rte 52 in Beacon, New York.
  • Test Fest - The Guidance Department of Beacon High School recently held a Test Fest to help students prepare for ACT and PSAT exams. The Test Fest was held at the Beacon High School on different dates to allow more students access to the practice exams. For more information on future Test Fests, students should contact the High School Guidance Department.

Chalk Talk: Science Resources for Kids

National Geographic has a website that introduces little kids to science, and geography and even recipes. Called the National Geographic Website for Little Kids, the site has games, fun information, craft activities, and even survey for little kids to answer. Games include Australia Maze, Friendship Garden, and Tour the World. Kids can sharpen their detective skills by being an insect detective, and learn cooking skills such as how to make lemon lion cupcakes. The site is fun for kids and their parents to enjoy together.
