Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bennetsville District Curriculum

In English Language Arts classes, students learn reading and writing skills that transfer into college and future careers. They study both nonfiction and literature so that they able to synthesize all kinds of text. Language Arts skills are then practiced and built up through collaboration with other content areas, such as science and social studies. Research skills are also taught so that students know how to locate and evaluate quality information.

The course of study in Math is different than in the past in that the focus in deep rather than broad. Previously, students studied many concepts in a year and revisited them year after year slowly delving deeper into the concept. The Common Core focuses on fewer concepts in a school year, but challenges students to deeper understanding. The ultimate goal of this change in focus is greater mastery and ability to retain ideas over a longer time.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College Major

Selecting a course of study is important, and it can be daunting for many students. Taking classes from several disciplines may help a young college student narrow down some of the choices. Shadowing someone from professions of interest could also be helpful. Another idea is to get a job working in a support role for the profession, such as working at as a receptionist at a dental office if one is interested in dentistry. This can help a student see the day to day work first hand and over a long period of time, it may also help him or her get their foot in the door if they choose that career path. Encouraging your child to try different things can help them find the best fit and hopefully lead them to a fulfilling career.
