Bethel District and Curriculum

The Lower Kuskokwim School District curriculum is aligned to Alaska State Standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). The Math curriculum is designed to foster foundational concepts and skills in numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. Middle school students learn to be mathematically literate thinkers and problem solvers. The high school curriculum addresses how mathematics can be applied in daily life. Advanced courses ready students for college or career pursuits.

We currently cover the following Bethel-area school district: Lower Kuskokwim School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bethel District Curriculum

In the elementary grades children learn the fundamentals of scientific observation. In middle school, students learn the chemical, earth and life sciences in an integrated approach. High school students deepen their knowledge and skill in these core sciences. The area’s unique geography, ecology and wildlife provide opportunities to learn ecology and environmental science in living laboratories. Students whose village schools do not offer advanced math or science courses may apply to the district’s RANSEP College Readiness Program.

Elementary-age students learn the foundational skills needed to become fluent, independent readers and writers, and effective speakers and listeners. Middle school students are introduced to increasingly complex fiction and nonfiction works. They practice the major forms of written expression such as reflective, expository and persuasive. High school students learn to appreciate literary fiction and share critical responses orally and in writing. They learn to make credible, supportable points with their written work.
