Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brighton Township District Curriculum

Students learn how to become knowledgeable in the use of numbers and equation through the mathematics curriculum. At Brighton Township schools, this study is begun when the students begin to learn to count numbers. Soon they learn to manipulate them to learn how to add and subtract. In the middle school years students become proficient enough to be able to solve for missing factors in equations. At the time of graduation they will have had many opportunities to master advanced algebra, calculus or statistics which will help them to open up whatever the future holds for them.

Brighton Township schools include various areas of science in their curriculum, including biology, chemistry, physics and ecology. The study of science encourages the student to look at the world from a different point of view, each one a little differently. Biology look at life and show the students the factors that are required for life to survive. Chemistry deals with the substances which all matter is made, from those that can be seen with the eyes to those that require the use of microscopes. Physics is the study of matter and force.

This allows the school to create lessons that will allow the students to be prepared for the ever-changing global community. The curriculum is progressive and builds student knowledge by introducing the fundamentals during the early years and then increasing the challenges as students explore each topic. Grade-level expectations guide educators in preparing lessons that encompass the goals and prepare students for statewide assessments as well as their coming school years.

Chalk Talk: Social and Emotional Learning

To be truly successful in learning and life, children need to learn from every area, including from their social and emotional life. This area of education include helping the child to be aware of themselves and others. It makes them recognize their goals, how to achieve it, and how positive accomplishments give them motivation to go on to the next challenge. Parents can assist by talking with the children about feelings and how different actions make them feel. In addition, children need to learn how to manage their moods including impulses, plus they need to have a sense of self-motivation. Parents can help children grow in these areas through modeling the behavior they would like to see in their children.
