Chalk Talk: The Benefits of the Arts

Research shows that children whose education includes the arts reap many benefits. The arts require students to see things from multiple perspectives, which facilitates the development of critical thinking skills. The decision-making and planning skills required to create art also promotes the development of leadership skills. Students that study the arts, especially music, show greatly improved achievement in math. Drama courses have a similar positive impact on reading fluency and reading comprehension. The wide variety of artistic endeavors helps students develop an appreciation for diversity and multiple points of view, and also promotes a sense of community and engagement with one’s peers. Research also shows that schools in which arts courses are part of the curriculum have fewer discipline referrals and an improved school climate.
