Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Buckhannon District Curriculum

Upshur County Schools takes care of all students, even those who need special attention such as special needs students and Gifted students. With quality materials and programming, eligible students are assessed and evaluated, then a personal plan is written up for each eligible student. Once this is done, the student receives their instruction in accordance with the plan so that they can receive all necessary supports and get the most out of their education.

High school students are encouraged to take courses that will assist them in reaching their career and educational goals. The academic courses all help develop the types of critical thinking and analysis students will need to succeed after graduation. Advanced Placement classes are provided in some subjects as well as electives which will introduce students to arts, language, physical education, and many other subjects. Upon graduation, students are equipped with the skills and knowledge that they need to proceed forward in this modern era.

Chalk Talk: Why a Healthy Breakfast Is Important for your Child

When the kids are waking up and fighting daylight, it may be that the last thing on your mind is sitting them down for breakfast. So what is the big deal anyway? Studies have shown that a child who has eaten a good breakfast is more alert in class and less distracted in their studies. It turns out that food fuels the brain which is necessary for top performance in school. And your child won’t be distracted by those hunger pains either. So, even though your child doesn’t want to get out of bed, it’s worth the extra ten minutes it will take for them to eat a good, balanced breakfast with grain, protein, and sugar. Also, children who have a breakfast routine at home will better develop good eating habits as they grow up and go out into the world. This will prepare them for another rigorous day at school and success in the future.
