Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burlington District Curriculum

As part of the Burlington environmental education curriculum, students learn how to evaluate environmental issues that cause problems for society. In addressing environmental problems, students examine how society has approached the problems in the past, evaluate the effectiveness of past resolutions, and propose additional actions to take in order to better address the situation. Students also learn how to collect scientific data in order to examine a problem in depth. Learners collect samples, conduct chemical analyses, and utilize computer mapping programs to develop a better understanding of the issue at hand.

Burlington’s family and consumer science curriculum introduces learners to early childhood education and childcare issues. Students identify the various issues that impact childcare, such as quality of training for childcare workers and the number of children per childcare worker. Theories of child development are discussed, with students analyzing the historical contributions that have impacted how children are cared for today. Students acquire the ability to help regulate a child’s behavior using child development and psychological techniques.

Chalk Talk: Is Community College the Right Choice?

For some students, attending a large university might be a dream scenario. But what many students don’t realize is how overwhelming large university campuses can be. Instead, some students might be better served by attending a community college. Community college classes tend to be smaller, which gives students more opportunities to interact with and establish relationships with their classmates and professors. Additionally, community college campuses are often much smaller than those found at universities, which can help students feel less overwhelmed. There are many support services for students that help promote the development of strong academic skills that can lead to better success in the classroom. But perhaps the best benefit of community college is the price. A student can complete their first two years of a bachelor’s degree for a fraction of the cost of attending a university.
