Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burton District Curriculum

Elementary school students are taught a curriculum based on the fundamental basics of the four core subjects that include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The standards for these subjects are based on the national Common Core initiative whose purpose is to make sure all students graduate career or college ready. Reading focuses on not only being able to read grade level material fluently, but being able to thoroughly understand what is being read as well.

The Mathematics curriculum pushes for a deep understanding of skills such as four number operations, money, and measurement. These skills will later become the building blocks for courses in high school Mathematics and Science. Standards taught in elementary Science concentrate on life processes on earth including plants, animals, and the relationship between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Social Studies topics in elementary school focus on Michigan geography, history, and agriculture.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Grammar

Grammar has been a staple of American schools for decades and was once seen as a sign of great wealth. As technology has changed throughout the years, so has our language. The largest of these changes has come with texting. Shortened words, acronyms, and symbol have become a daily part of most students’ lives. However, proper grammar still has a place in this ever-evolving world. Colleges and universities have stringent requirements when it comes to written work and a student’s grades can be negatively impacted by bad grammar. It is important for a student to be able to express themselves in college using academic language. The same can be said for the working world. Employers pay attention to grammar on applications, resumes, and cover letters. While someone might be highly qualified for the position, an employer might pass on them due to improper grammar. As the saying goes, there’s a time and a place for everything, and knowing when it is necessary to use proper grammar is an important key to success.
