Chalk Talk: Helping the Introverted Child

Every child has their strengths. For the introvert, to build confidence, parents may want to play on this trait while helping the child in social situations. When striking up a conversation with others, the introverted child may not know how to begin. Parents can help by practicing some simple first lines for them to use. This is important because many children like this are not able to think quickly on their feet. This is also why parents should not put the child on the spot. Let them process before they talk. It is also important that this child is not overscheduled. They need some downtime to recharge and think. Parents also should make sure the teacher understands this characteristic in a child so there is a plan on how to help the child succeed. The phone also can be a scary thing for the introvert, making this another aspect that parents and child can role play. Finally, look for examples of introverts that the child can look to for a role model.
