Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chaska District Curriculum

The elementary program teaches the basics: reading, writing and math with a strong research-based curriculum and instruction. Each lesson is embedded with creativity, critical thinking and flexible grouping to meet the educational needs of each student. Additionally, each area of interest is taught by certified specialists in the arts, vocal and instrumental music, health and physical education.

This school district offers college preparatory courses and comprehensive curricula starting in middle. A personalized learning plan guides students through their course selection and prepares them for high school success. High school students are able to select elective classes based on their personal interests: Arts and Communication, Global Studies, Health and Social Sciences or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Students also have the opportunity to earn college credits through programs such as Project Lead the Way, a pre-engineering series as well as a variety of Advanced Placement classes.

Chalk Talk: Two-Way Dual-Language Program

By participating in a two-way dual language program, both native speakers and new-language learners have the opportunity to be a first-language model and a second-language learner. The University of Minnesota’s Center for Advanced Research of Language Acquisition (CARLA) states that an “Academically challenging learning environment is provided to bring children from two different language groups together to learn from and with each other in an integrated setting.” In order for a school to qualify as a two-way dual-immersion program, the minimum of one-third of each language group is necessary. Eastern Carver Country Schools’ La Academia, meets those requirements and Kindergarten instruction begins with 90% of the core academic instruction in Spanish and the remainder in English. Eventually, the percentages shift and both languages will be taught 50% of the day.
