Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cheshire District Curriculum

In Language Arts, the standards focus on literacy not only in literature but across all subjects and ranging into current events and media studies. It also focuses on writing, listening, and comprehension skills that are applied across the content areas. Writing is a major component of the Language Arts curriculum, and students are expected to write in narrative, persuasive and informational forms. In Mathematics, students begin with basic operational and computational skills that prepare them to understand more advanced topics in algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, or calculus.

In Science, the curriculum guides students through learning by engaging them in hands-on activities which bring scientific concepts to life. Inquiry skills are gained through the science curriculum, and students learn the value of testing assumptions and hypotheses. The sciences as a subject continue to expand from traditional offerings into areas like environmental science, engineering, and technology as well.

Chalk Talk: Challenging the Gifted

So much focus in the media is on catching those that fall behind in class. Many only think about those that struggle in school, who need extra help or tutoring. In the classroom though, it’s not just about the ones that are behind, but also about the ones who excel. In every school in America you can find those students are considered gifted. They catch on to concepts quickly but a problem is, they quickly become bored if not challenged. Gifted students can often become disruptive in class and even have low grades, because continually feeling unchallenged makes these students feel apathetic toward school. Teachers have the challenge of not only catching those that fall behind but pushing those that excel. Assessing these students differently is the key to keeping them motivated while at the same time not overburdening them with excessive amounts of school work, a task that is challenging for even the most seasoned educator.
