Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clovis District Curriculum

Common Core is geared at ensuring that all public schools in the state of New Mexico have the same level of educational excellence. The standards apply to English & Language Arts and Mathematics. The District is committed to having each student in the district achieve success and literacy in all of the core curriculum subjects but specifically in math and reading. The core curriculum subjects include mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. In English and Language Arts (ELA) students focus on developing critical thinking strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Students also learn the skill of critical analysis so they can demonstrate reading comprehension both in written and oral form. In mathematics students spend concentrated time learning core math subjects including computational skills, algebra, measurement, probability, geometry and statistics. There is a focus on becoming proficient in basic math skills and being able to apply these skills to higher math and in the real world.
