Part of the English language arts curriculum is developing speaking and listening skills. Middle school students in Clyde hone these skills by taking part in a variety of collaborative discussions. In one-on-one, small group, and whole class discussion settings, students acquire the ability to listen actively. Learners develop the ability to maintain eye contact with the speaker and use nonverbal communication to convey understanding. They also engage in questioning the speaker effectively so as to move the conversation forward in a natural manner.

High school students in Clyde have the opportunity to gain insight into financial responsibility as part of the financial literacy curriculum. Learners explore various career paths, focusing on the difference of income one can expect depending on their choice of career. Retirement, health benefits, and financial contributions like 401(k) plans are also explored. There is a financial responsibility component as well. Students learn about how financial decisions rest with each individual, and that one’s lack of money or abundance of it is connected to one’s decisions.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

If your child is struggling in school, a tutor can be the perfect intervention to help your child achieve his or her potential. Choosing the most effective tutor requires parents to consider a variety of factors. First, the tutor should be a subject matter expert in the field in which your child is struggling. While a person may be a highly effective math tutor, if your child needs help with science, you should find someone with expertise in that area. Secondly, personality is an important factor in selecting a tutor. You want someone that gels well with your child, and has the unique combination of skills needed to motivate your child and keep him or her engaged in learning. Finally, your child’s tutor should be an excellent communicator and be adept at explaining confusing or difficult concepts to your child. They should be a good facilitator as well, and be able to direct your child such that he or she develops confidence in their weakest areas of study.
