In one-on-one, small group, and whole class discussion settings, students acquire the ability to listen actively. Learners develop the ability to maintain eye contact with the speaker and use nonverbal communication to convey understanding. They also engage in questioning the speaker effectively so as to move the conversation forward in a natural manner.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

If your child is struggling in school, a tutor can be the perfect intervention to help your child achieve his or her potential. Choosing the most effective tutor requires parents to consider a variety of factors. First, the tutor should be a subject matter expert in the field in which your child is struggling. While a person may be a highly effective math tutor, if your child needs help with science, you should find someone with expertise in that area. Secondly, personality is an important factor in selecting a tutor. You want someone that gels well with your child, and has the unique combination of skills needed to motivate your child and keep him or her engaged in learning. Finally, your child’s tutor should be an excellent communicator and be adept at explaining confusing or difficult concepts to your child. They should be a good facilitator as well, and be able to direct your child such that he or she develops confidence in their weakest areas of study.
