Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cobourg District Curriculum

In Language, students learn the literacy and communication skills that allow them to read across genres and content areas, write for different purposes, communicate orally and listen well, and to understand media. Decoding and verbal reasoning skills are developed through the variety of literacy tasks and opportunities to express ideas in writing. Students are taught how to analyze and make meaning from different types of texts so they can apply critical thinking to stories, poems, as well as persuasive essays or editorials.

Math provides a basis for scientific learning in terms of the problem-solving methods and procedures that students develop. In algebra, students learn to use operations and functions to find solutions. In geometry, students work through arguments and proofs to find a reasonable answer. The data analysis strand requires that students be familiar with different statistical methods and be able to create models for mathematical outcomes based on their knowledge of quantitative data. These skills are necessary for the advanced courses in science and technology.

Chalk Talk: Building an Interest in Science

Science is a subject that is easily explored and easily ignored. To help a child see the importance of science, parents only need to ask the child to observe a family pet to see how they adapt to their environment and how they differ from wolves or coyote. Parents can also ask a child to help them as they cook. Many recipes involve the mixing of ingredients to make a totally different item. Talk to the child about how this is a form of chemistry. By bringing science into the home or by making a family activity, the child can see how science is all around them and all they need to do is have fun!
