Cottonwood District and Curriculum

Arizona’s College and Career Ready curriculum program is used by schools across the state, keeping in mind the skills that students will need when they graduate from high school. With the globalization of the workforce, students need to be able to compete for their desired careers and to draw upon a range of academic and technical skills. It is also important for students to be ready academically to enter college. With that in mind, Cottonwood schools ensure a curriculum strictly aligned with national and Arizona’s state standards.

We currently cover the following Cottonwood-area school districts: Cottonwood-Oak Creek Elementary District and Mingus Union High School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cottonwood District Curriculum

In English/Language Arts, the curriculum is designed to enable students to gain the skills needed in reading, writing and listening, developing critical thinking and comprehension skills. Writing has become a key component of the curriculum, emphasizing academic writing skills such as organizing key ideas and awareness to tone and voice. Students are also expected to learn the language skills and ways to understand word meanings needed to navigate the world after graduation.

In Mathematics, the curriculum is designed to be more concentrated and with a more concentrated and stronger design that stresses operations properties such as place value, as well as teaching the ability to restructure properties and organize the principals involved. Students will constantly return to the principles and problem-solving processes they have learned so that they can keep building to higher math skills.

Chalk Talk: Implementing New Curriculum

There will come times when administrators need to make changes to curriculum that is currently being used. If administrators want things to run more smoothly with the whole process of designing and implementing the new program they need to ensure that teachers who will be affected by the changes take part in the curriculum design. By allowing the teachers to play an active role they will feel ownership and be more willing to successfully implement the curriculum. Additionally, keeping parents and families involved in the process helps to reinforce the broader goals of the curriculum outside of school. As with the implementation of the Common Core Standards, when a major change occurs in a district it effects all the stakeholders and all possible information pertaining to those changes should be available.
