Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Covedale District Curriculum

Covedale’s English language arts curriculum helps elementary school students develop the skills they need to effectively read informational texts. Students learn how to ask and answer questions about a text, with prompting from their teacher. Children also acquire the ability to review the main points of a text, including the essential details and supporting evidence. Students learn how to deal with situations in which they are unfamiliar with a word or phrase. They learn how to utilize traditional tools, such as dictionaries, and online tools that help them improve their understanding of words and phrases.

The financial literacy curriculum in Covedale introduces high school students to financial concepts related to savings, credit, and employment. Students learn about making sound financial decisions that set them up for stability in adulthood. Learners explore various options for savings and investments, including savings accounts, CDs, money market accounts, and stocks. Students examine the risks and rewards of each type of savings strategy, and gain experience with savings and diversifying their portfolios through simulated financial games.

Chalk Talk: Why Extracurricular Activities Are Necessary

While the focus of going to school should be on academic work, there is a lot of value in students participating in sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities. Activities like sports get kids up and active, learning how to work as a member of a team, and help them adopt habits that improve time management. Clubs and organization such as choir, Art Club, or drama facilitate the development of creative skills and get kids thinking outside of the box. Participation in volunteer organizations is also beneficial to students because it shows them the value of serving others, while also demonstrating how they can make a positive difference in their community. Participation in any of these activities will help improve students’ mood, increase their self-esteem, and alleviate stress that builds up from schoolwork, issues at home, and things that occur in everyday life.
