Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Crofton District Curriculum

Crofton high school students learn about mental and emotional health as part of the health education curriculum. Students acquire skills that allow them to be effective communicators. Learners develop these skills in the context of discussing emotions, feelings, needs, and wants with family, friends, peers, and teachers. Students learn about how to employ strategies for making good decisions as well. Kids learn the need for thinking things through, and weighing various factors when it comes to making decisions about their mental and physical health and well-being.

The computer literacy curriculum is intended to help Crofton students understand technology and use it appropriately to meet educational and career goals. Elementary school students learn basic skills, such as various parts of a computer, how to type, and how to use the Internet safely. Students also learn how to save files, transfer files, and utilize tools such as online encyclopedias and email. Learners take part in specialized studies that give them insight into various programs, including digital imaging software.

Chalk Talk: Importance of Character Education Programs

To help build a culture of respect, many public schools have instituted character education programs as part of their overall curriculum. These programs focus on many aspects of citizenship, multiculturalism, and positive decision-making that help children become confident, caring, and resilient. Character education programs promote self-confidence, compassion, diligence, and self-control as well. While these fortitudes are valuable in and of themselves, the process by which they are gained is valuable as well. Studies show that schools with character education programs have fewer discipline referrals, reduced substance abuse, and fewer reports of violence and vandalism. Additionally, students that participate in character education programs show improved academic performance, from turning in homework on time to improved standardized test scores.
