Chalk Talk: Importance of Character Education Programs

To help build a culture of respect, many public schools have instituted character education programs as part of their overall curriculum. These programs focus on many aspects of citizenship, multiculturalism, and positive decision-making that help children become confident, caring, and resilient. Character education programs promote self-confidence, compassion, diligence, and self-control as well. While these fortitudes are valuable in and of themselves, the process by which they are gained is valuable as well. Studies show that schools with character education programs have fewer discipline referrals, reduced substance abuse, and fewer reports of violence and vandalism. Additionally, students that participate in character education programs show improved academic performance, from turning in homework on time to improved standardized test scores.
