Chalk Talk: Benefits of Small Classes

In school districts across the country, efforts have been made to reduce the size of classes, particularly at the elementary school level. Districts that are fortunate enough to have the funding to build more schools and hire more teachers are reaping the many benefits of smaller class sizes. Research shows that having fewer kids in a class increases the academic performance of each student. In fact, studies from various states show that students perform better on a variety of measures, including test performance, overall course grade, and attendance. These gains are experienced by students of all backgrounds, but especially so in children who lag behind. Minority students and those that come from a background of poverty experience twice the academic gains as the average student. These gains are evident throughout the rest of the child’s K-12 career, as students who are part of smaller classes in elementary school show greater achievement than their peers across all subjects.
