Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dearborn District Curriculum

Dearborn Public Schools use a variety of instruction to teach Language Arts. Younger students learn phonics and comprehension skills during Readers Workshop. At this age, there is also a focus on reading accuracy and fluency. High school students follow the Readers Apprenticeship program which is used to teach reading skills in all classes across the curriculum. Writing is also focused on so that students learn a process approach to creating effective written work using steps such as brainstorming and revising.

Mathematics instruction in this district is strongly focused on real world applications. Students in the elementary grades use the Everyday Mathematics series which teaches math in a hands-on way. Students in middle and high school study algebra and geometry. More advanced classes like Statistics and Advanced Placement classes are also offered as well as classes at the Dearborn Math, Science, and Technology Center.

Chalk Talk: What Does the United States Department of Education Do?

The Department of Education does not run any schools but they do have an important job. This agency is responsible for distributing federal tax dollars to school districts, collecting data on student performance, and enforcing civil rights laws in our schools. This organization is run by the Education Secretary who reports directly to the President. Without the Department of Education, it would be very hard for federal assistance to reach local schools.
