Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Delta District Curriculum

The Delta County School District delivers a curriculum that is based on the Colorado Achievement Standards. These standards outline what students should learn and know at each grade level from pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Included in the standards is a comprehensive curriculum in the social studies. These standards were devised using the latest educational research and data to ensure learning is rigorous, relevant, and prepares students to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Science is another critical component of the Delta County School District’s curriculum. Students engage in a study of earth and space science, biological sciences, chemistry, and physics. Students have the opportunity to examine the relationship between plants and animals in various ecosystems. Chemistry lessons focus on the chemical reactions and physical changes that occur when various mixtures are created. In physics, students acquire an understanding of forms of energy and matter, and devise methods to decrease energy use to protect the planet.

Chalk Talk: Three Tips for Increasing Confidence on Test Day

Children can often feel anxiety when a big test comes around. But there are many strategies parents can use at home to prepare their student for success. First, help your child focus on the essential skills they will need to be successful – problem solving, reading for content, and time management – in addition to the knowledge they will need to demonstrate. Second, practice with your child. Ask them questions or give them practice questions to work on at home. While doing so, encourage them to check their work. Lastly, use academic language at home so your child gets used to the words and phrasing that are commonly used in test questions. Increasing their familiarity with the common testing words such as analyze, evaluate, and examine will prepare them for success.
