Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Douro-Dummer District Curriculum

In English, students build literacy and verbal communication skills that allow them to read analytically, recognize points of view, make connections between ideas, and gain knowledge from non-fiction texts. Writing is emphasized as it helps students develop reflective and analytic thinking, while gaining the ability to clearly communicate. When students are in secondary school, the English curriculum requires their ability to analyze, interpret, research and evaluate information effectively.

The Math curriculum brings about mathematic literacy and method-based skills starting with topics in numeracy and moving into topics like measurement and spatial relationships, charts and graphs, proportions, and algebraic thinking. Students begin to develop a range of knowledge in how to manipulate and analyze quantities that they are able to use reason and logic in their problem-solving. These advanced abilities which students fully realize during secondary school pave the way to success.

The curriculum designates the expectations for learning within each subject over the grade span and explains the types of thinking skills which students should develop. Honesty, hard work, and respect for others are emphasized on a daily basis in activities that promote cooperation and effective communication. Students in Douro-Dummer also learn how to live emotionally and physically healthy lives through character education and physical education programs. The districts also depend on community involvement to build a strong support system for its learners.

Keeping Informed: Recent Douro-Dummer Educational News

  • Social and Behaviour Learning - The Kawartha Pine Ridge District uses a method called Restorative Practice to guide their policies and efforts to handle issues of negative behaviour. The goal is to bring the whole family into the process of making right a situation that went wrong, and not laying blame but building from them and recognizing these learning experiences.
  • 40 Hours of Community Service - Students across the province are required to complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. The districts have established clear and serious guidelines for what students are expected to do in order to fulfill this service requirement. This opportunity may also afford students the chance to combine their community service with an independent study that could earn them credit for their learning while working on a service project.
  • Outdoor Education Centre Program Outline - The plan for student learning, the opportunities and initiatives within students' Environmental Education, and the expected outcomes are encompassed in the Outdoor Education Centre Program Outline. Students have the chance to take classes and use the resources at four centres throughout the area which provide year-round programming for students.

Chalk Talk: What Is EQAO?

The Education Quality and Accountability Office is a division of the Ministry of Education which exists to ensure that students are receiving a quality education and achieving the standards of learning. One way in which they do this is to have students take formal assessments in literacy and math throughout their school years to measure student proficiency within the subjects. These assessments can show how whole grades and whole schools are doing at raising students' academic success on traditional measures and the areas in which instruction may need to be focused.
