Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Cleveland District Curriculum

The science standards in East Cleveland include elementary school studies that focus on attaining the basic scientific knowledge and skills required for scientific inquiry. Students learn how to observe their environment and record data. Learners are introduced to motion and its underlying concepts as well. Students examine the life cycles of organisms, and study the relationship between an organism’s environment and their physical and behavioral traits. Forms of energy are studied, including solar, wind power, and other renewable sources.

Students also participate in a physical education curriculum that prepares them to be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy young adults. The wellness component of the curriculum helps students devise a better understanding of health, the role of exercise and regular physical activity in one’s overall health, and the role that healthy relationships can have on one’s mental wellbeing. Students also learn effective ways to stay fit, including devising an exercise and nutrition plan.

Chalk Talk: Three Reasons Why Technology Is Vital to Education

Technology in the classroom offers students many benefits. First, technology provides kids the opportunity to study whenever and wherever they please. By expanding time and space, technology connects children with valuable educational resources from around the world. Second, technology facilitates individuals pacing and sequencing for kids. Students who need additional assistance can repeat lessons as needed, and kids who quickly demonstrate understanding can work ahead at their own pace. Lastly, technology in the classroom keeps students engaged. In today’s highly technological world, tablets, mobile, phones, the Internet, and computers are a part of the daily lives of children. By bringing those familiar tools into the classroom, teachers can keep students interested in their studies.
