By the time students are in secondary school, they have a strong enough foundation upon which to do complex and analytic work.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Zorra-Tavistock District Curriculum

In writing, students learn how to use the language as well as various words and phrases to avoid; they also learn how to structure their writings in a way that allows for good flow from one idea to the next. Facilitating this flow is the use of good transitions to improve cohesion from paragraph to paragraph. The revising and editing process is covered as well. Students learn how to edit as they write, and also learn how to give and receive constructive feedback in order to become more effective writers.

In algebra, students perform basic arithmetic on polynomials and use polynomial identities to solve problems. They also rewrite rational expressions and devise an understanding of the relationship between factors of polynomials and zeros. Students learn how to see the structure in expressions as well and how to communicate their understanding of these relationships. Learners acquire the ability to write expressions, interpret the structure of expressions, and create models from which to extrapolate data.

Chalk Talk: Broad-based and Specialized Studies

The schools offer students a wide range of opportunities for their education. Students can take on a broad, academic program which will prepare them for college and career opportunities. Students may also pursue a highly specialized program, like the High Skills Majors, which will focus their learning in on a field they expect to work in after graduation. The choice that a student makes for their pathway should be based on interests, their feelings about their future pursuits, and whether they feel like specializing is the right course. Many students will not know until college what their career path will look like, and for those students, a more broad-based curriculum may be better suited.
