Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edenton District Curriculum

With the introduction of Common Core State Standards, the school staff has been provided and trained accordingly to teach the children each new concept and technique step by step on a slow and gradual basis. Starting from one digit numbers, they make the child move forward to two and three digit numbers in Math and perform simple calculations with them. Similarly in English, children start off with the basic alphabet and sound system and then go on to reading and writing bigger words and sentences.

For Science also, basic topics like parts of the body and senses are introduced that are taken forward with more detail and added concepts at higher levels. Major focus is given on performing simple science experiments and making and labeling diagrams to better make the child understand the phenomenon they are studying. Hands-on learning and using the scientific process to validate or disprove hypotheses is also integral to students’ science education. Scientific literacy, the ability to write lab reports and communicate scientific findings are also emphasized.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College

Before you start looking for a college for your child, discuss all his/her requirements and conditions that you require. The subjects the child has taken and wants to study in the future, the location of the college (any particular state or area you want the college to be in), any housing arrangements you require and so on. Based on all the criteria, search for the most appropriate colleges and make a list of options you find, that you can shortlist afterwards. Also, take the time to research scholarship opportunities that relate to a student’s background and future interests. Research carefully and check the ratings for the college, also read out reviews and comments for each particular college to know parents and students feedback about it. You can also consult any experienced professor or educationist for his/her advice before you take any final decision.
