By the end of the elementary school, students actually begin moving towards algebra, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus to prepare them for high school math.

In an effort to teach awareness and safety, these high school students will visit students, from kindergarten to eighth grade, in the Dysart Elementary Schools to instruct the younger children on safety-related issues such as: water safety, bicycle and pedestrian safety, stranger danger, calling 911, safe places for help, exit drills from the home, and hands-only CPR.
  • Five Dysart Teachers Earn National Certification - Dysart Unified School District announced that five Dysart teachers recently attained National Board Certification: four teachers at the elementary level, and one Science Specialist. Teachers must meet the basic requirements and credentialing of the state in which they teach. To be a certified teacher at a national level is a prestigious honor, as there are numerous requirements to be met. A National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) is a lengthy process where the candidate must demonstrate extensive and advanced training, knowledge and skills and then continue to maintain that certification at the national level of teaching standards.
  • Dysart High School Produces Performance - In 2005, the date of January 27 was designated on the calendar to be International Holocaust Remembrance Day so that the world would remember those lost at Auschwitz from 1939 to 1945. The theatre group at Willow Canyon High School also wanted to commemorate that day and give an evening performance of their production. The Willow Canyon Theatre performed works about and selections from the time of the Holocaust. The production was a great success, congratulations to Willow Canyon Theatre on a job well done.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Teaching Nursery Rhymes to Early Readers

Many educational studies have shown that when children are taught nursery rhymes or hear songs and rhyming poems at an early age, their skills in phonemic awareness and reading readiness are greatly enhanced. As phonemic awareness can be defined as “an awareness of sounds in spoken words,” children hear the cadence of the rhythms and the patterns of the words in the nursery rhymes. Children connect with the nursery rhymes and lyrical rhyming poems. The sing-song and often silly verses make it fun for the child to understand the concept of the story. This awareness of sounds according to the research can be a strong predictor to reading readiness and future reading success.
