Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Emporia District Curriculum

The Reading curriculum at Greensville County Public Schools begins with students learning the sounds that each letter makes. These students learn the different parts of a book and the different genres through books such as “Sarah Plain and Tall” and “Daedalus and Icarus.” As they continue, they learn to tie what they are reading to their own lives as they cover units such as Identity and Independence. Students learn to look at books as a pathway to adventure through their years of education, so they will continue on this journey after graduation.

Children begin to learn about Social Studies by hosting community helpers such as the fire department, Lifestar and the sheriff’s office. As they continue they take these basic community roles and learn to explore other helpers at the governmental levels, locally, statewide and nationally. They also learn about the governments throughout the world, how they differ from each other and the characteristics they share.

Chalk Talk: Boosting Children’s Science Skills

Each child can benefit from a parent helping them with improving science skills, but many parents are not sure how to do it. One of the first things to help a child with is to encourage then to pay attention in class to whatever the teacher may be saying. It is more difficult for a child to learn the material on their own, at home, then to pay attention and asking questions during class time. In addition, students will do better if they voice their opinions during group work also. Taking notes and finding out why something happens will also help students to better in class. It also helps if the child knows the metric system, has the proper tools at hand and is comfortable with their math facts. With these skills the student has a better chance of succeeding in class.
