Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Essex District Curriculum

The high school English language arts curriculum in Essex includes instruction in how to become an effective writer. Students learn about various types of texts, including informational, expository, and narrative, and learn the differences in the way each is constructed. Learners acquire the ability to link various ideas together such that there is continuity throughout their writing. Students work with various types of source material, and learn how to glean information from them and put that information into their own ideas and words.

The elementary school physical education curriculum revolves around developing the fine and gross motor skills needed to participate safely and effectively in physical activities. Students work with skill themes, learning how to maintain balance, throw and catch a ball, kick a ball, and take part in basic tumbling exercises. Children learn about the value of exercise as well. The positive impacts on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems is examined.

Chalk Talk: The Great Homework Debate

For as long as there has been school, kids have complained about homework. But for some of today’s students, homework is a thing of the past. Districts in various parts of the nation are moving to a homework-free model in the hopes that it will help kids enjoy learning more. The logic behind no homework policies is that homework serves to impede kids’ social and home lives. Rather than viewing it as an opportunity to learn something, many kids view it as an undue punishment. Additionally, because doing homework can cause disagreements between kids and their parents, eliminating homework helps reduce that stress and conflict. Some schools that have banned homework have seen an improvement in students’ attitudes in learning. Others have seen an increase in kids taking the things they enjoy learning about home with them to study on their own or share with their families. Supporters of the no homework policy maintain that giving kids more autonomy will serve them well as they go to college or enter the workforce.
