Chalk Talk: The Great Homework Debate

For as long as there has been school, kids have complained about homework. But for some of today’s students, homework is a thing of the past. Districts in various parts of the nation are moving to a homework-free model in the hopes that it will help kids enjoy learning more. The logic behind no homework policies is that homework serves to impede kids’ social and home lives. Rather than viewing it as an opportunity to learn something, many kids view it as an undue punishment. Additionally, because doing homework can cause disagreements between kids and their parents, eliminating homework helps reduce that stress and conflict. Some schools that have banned homework have seen an improvement in students’ attitudes in learning. Others have seen an increase in kids taking the things they enjoy learning about home with them to study on their own or share with their families. Supporters of the no homework policy maintain that giving kids more autonomy will serve them well as they go to college or enter the workforce.
