Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fairfield District Curriculum

In English Language Arts there is a strong focus on literacy in the areas of reading, writing and speaking. The standards seek to allow the students many opportunities for in depth understanding and critical thinking. In Science, the focus remains on creative and innovative thinking. The students probe to deepen their understanding and apply their lessons to real world applications. In Mathematics as well, the curriculum teaches fewer topics so that the students have time to gain a real understanding of the content before building upon it.

The hallmark of Fairfield’s philosophy on education combines student motivation and engagement in the classroom as well as teacher intervention coupled with acceleration. Teachers collaborate to determine the best possible teaching strategies that will challenge and engage the students. There are high expectations for the students stay motivated while being increasingly challenged. The district also offers a wide variety of courses aside from the core courses, such as business, technology and art, as well as programs geared for gifted learners.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Remembering

Learning how to study is one of the biggest obstacles faced by students from all ages but most importantly in high school and college when the amount of material for exams grows intensely. The absolute best thing to do is to try to understand the material or vocabulary word instead of just trying rogue memorization. If it’s a matter of just memorizing though, trying to form an association with something you already know can be helpful. Repetition and graphic organizers can also help you remember large amounts of information and of course trying to make something fun is key.
