Farmington District and Curriculum

The Farmington Municipal School District oversees the public schools in the city of Farmington, New Mexico. Students are challenged with a rigorous educational program that helps students achieve academic success. The district is implementing the state approved Common Core State Standards Curriculum which helps to provide an equal level of educational excellence across all public schools in the state of New Mexico.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington District Curriculum

The standards are designed to provide students with a strong fluency in core subjects such as Mathematics and English & Language Arts. In English, students study reading and writing in addition to learning how to listen accurately and to speak correctly. The curriculum includes both literature and informational text and emphasizes the development of comprehension skills such as decoding meaning and building vocabulary. Writing is also focused on so that students are able to write in different styles and for a range of purposes.

In Mathematics, the number of subjects covered has been narrowed down to a core group including computational skills, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability. Students learn how to apply what they have learned to real life problems in preparation for a job or advanced education. The math curriculum also supports students advanced learning in the sciences and technology where they draw upon many basic skills to understand more complex concepts.

Keeping Informed: Recent Farmington Educational News

  • Parent Place - The Farmington Municipal School District has created an online resource for the parents of the students in the district called the Parent Place. At the Parent Place, parents and families will find all kinds of information to empower and support while parents. The information is geared at providing guidance on helping parents help their students be successful in school.
  • Parent Education Night - A recent Parent Education Night focused on the Empowering and Informing Parents program. This program is geared toward providing parents with helping parents deal with different student issues that can arise as children go though their school years. The event was held at the Sycamore Street Community Center.
  • Parents as Teachers Program - The Parents as Teachers Program has a mission to help all children reach their educational and social potential. The organization meets at the Rocinante High School in Farmington. Parents of young children are urged to join. The organization provides monthly visits with parents and children and parent educators provide child development information and activities.

Chalk Talk: Tate Museum’s Tate Kids

Children can visit one of England’s most famous museums the Tate Museum on their website for children called Tate Kids. At the website children can play a variety of fun and creative games all geared toward creativity and the development of an interest in art. Games include the Dot Shop where kids can make designs using dots, or they can splash virtual paint around with the Spin game, learn about cubism while cubifying Paris with the Cuboom Game or make their own masterpiece with the Tate Paint game. There are also instructions on the site for creating a pop art hat, information on how to carve soap and how to make a mask.
