Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Farmington District Curriculum
The standards are designed to provide students with a strong fluency in core subjects such as Mathematics and English & Language Arts. In English, students study reading and writing in addition to learning how to listen accurately and to speak correctly. The curriculum includes both literature and informational text and emphasizes the development of comprehension skills such as decoding meaning and building vocabulary. Writing is also focused on so that students are able to write in different styles and for a range of purposes.
In Mathematics, the number of subjects covered has been narrowed down to a core group including computational skills, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability. Students learn how to apply what they have learned to real life problems in preparation for a job or advanced education. The math curriculum also supports students advanced learning in the sciences and technology where they draw upon many basic skills to understand more complex concepts.
