Florence District and Curriculum

The Florence Unified School District is an up-and-coming school district. The schools are high-tech; there are eight computers in every core classroom in the K-8 schools and Interactive Whiteboards are in classrooms throughout the district. The curriculum is built around the Common Core Standards which relies on major topics in each subject to serve as learning strands throughout a students’ education, developing a strong depth of knowledge within each subject.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Florence District Curriculum

Florence schools, like many school districts in Arizona, have adopted a curriculum program called “Beyond Textbooks.” This program is a curriculum model used to increase student achievement in the content areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies with the goal of challenging students at their level.

In the “Beyond Textbooks” program, students learn concepts as units. At the end of the unit they are assessed with five questions. If they answer the questions correctly, students can continue on into Enrichment activities. If they do not answer the assessment questions correctly, they will work on Reteach activities in order to practice and reinforce the concept. Beyond Textbooks is one of the innovative programs implemented to prepare all district students proficiently in the skills and concepts which they are expected to understand.

Keeping Informed: Recent Florence Educational News

  • Family Assistance Program - In 2008, a Family Assistance Program began to help “bridge the gap” for families going through a financial crisis. The program’s goal was to provide help so that academic progress and opportunity could continue uninterrupted for all children in the family. Project Bridge began as a small idea, but has over the years grown exponentially as the need to support families has grown bigger and bigger. When the Florence Unified School District donated space for Project Bridge, the organization was able to create opportunities and events for families. In June of 2012, Project Bridge officially became a non-profit and they expect to continue to grow and develop in order to help families in the Florence area.
  • Circle Cross Ranch Reading and Writing Scholars - The fourth grade students at Circle Cross Ranch K-8 School are making great progress in their Reading and Writing Class. In Writing, the students have been learning about the six traits of writing: voice, ideas, word choice, organization, sentence fluency and convention. Because reading and writing go hand in hand, the students will transfer those same lessons about writing to their reading lessons. Students are encouraged by their teacher to read every day for at least 45 minutes, and then document in their reading logs. All of the lessons and the practice will help these students to become a better readers, writers and overall learners.
  • Scholarship Resources for District Families - The Florence Unified District's Counseling Department maintains an active list of scholarship information for students in the process of applying to college. As new opportunities arise, the department posts the information on the district website and maintains similar information in their office. The scholarship opportunities are for students with a range of abilities, differing interests, and different goals. The scholarships are provided on merit, need, potential and skills that students have demonstrated.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Empowering Children

Let’s face it; while kids are growing up, they go through some stages when they don’t feel so great about themselves. They may feel that they are too skinny, too tall, too short, not smart enough, their hair is a disaster. Whatever the reason, help your child move through this stage by finding out what interests him or her. Help your child find his or her passion and embrace it. Find out what interests him or her, what makes them happy. A child who is happy, content and has confidence in him or herself will have better experiences in school and have better relationships with others. Help build self-confidence and self-esteem in one child and you will be creating a more positive future for us all.
