Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Franklin District Curriculum

Mathematics classes enhance precision, teach students to use provided tools, and improve abstract reasoning skills. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus are some of the courses available. After completion, students will be able to confidently apply their knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom. In Language Arts, the elementary program begins with an emphasis on “learning to read” progressing to “reading to learn.” At the secondary level, the curriculum is a balance of literature and writing.

The district is also part of a wider network offering technical courses in many regions where students can take career interest classes and gain work experience. There are internships, work learning experiences, and the expectation to perform community service for all high schoolers. To round out the high school experience, students may also choose to participate in team sports, arts groups, and extracurricular activities and clubs.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose Electives

Do you have a passion for singing? Or maybe you love to make sculptures or paint. Elective classes give you the chance to explore your interests and possibly find some new talents along the way. In high school, a student gets to choose electives to take in addition to their required classes. You may find that taking electives related to after-school clubs or sports really complements your schedule and keeps you motivated. For example, if you love singing and are a member of the choir, think about taking a voice class. Members of the Spanish club can immerse themselves in the Spanish culture by taking Spanish electives. Counselors and teachers can help you find where your talents lie and make helpful suggestions. Also, elective classes strengthen your transcript and look great to college admission officers. These classes can give a better picture of who you are and show that you’re a well-rounded person. There are many options for elective courses; just check out what your school has to offer!
