Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Galax District Curriculum

The Social Studies curriculum at Galax City Public Schools begins with the community helpers as they take field trips to the fire station. As their education goes along so do the opportunities to use the surrounding environment. The students take trips to Matthews Living Farm and Monticello to help bring the curriculum to life. They are able to see examples of topics that they learn in class. When these students progress, these experiences stay with them so when they enter high school they are ready to further study the world.

Reading begins by introducing children to the letters and sounds of the alphabet. They then see how these sounds blend together to help authors create books that they read in and out of school. These children also are provided a variety of ways to help these children become better readers. By bringing Accelerated Reader, Breakthrough to Literacy and Headsprout, educators give students a step up in the literary world so when they graduate from High School they will life-long readers.

Galax District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Galax City Public Schools take advantage of the community to enrich the curriculum, which is based on Virginia’s Standards of Learning. These guidelines lay out the progression of skills and knowledge which students will build each year within their subjects. The frameworks are also aligned to statewide assessments that measure proficiency in core subjects.

We currently cover the following Galax-area school district: Galax City Public Schools.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Creative Play

Make-believe whether playing with dolls or going on a pirate adventure, is beneficial in the development of a child. This type of play is preferable to having a child watch television or sit in front of a video game. Some of the positive aspects of creative play, over passive play, are that creative play builds their imagination and creativity. As students move on to science and mathematics classes, these skills will be beneficial. Children, in this type of play also build their development intellectually, socially and emotionally.
