Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Geneva District Curriculum

A central component of the Geneva curriculum is an all-inclusive exploration of English language arts. At the elementary level, the curriculum focuses on helping students acquire basic skills, such as identifying key ideas and details in literary texts. Young learners work on integrating ideas from various authors in order to develop a greater understanding of the topic under study. In middle school, learners explore strategies for supporting their opinions in their writings, such as noting research and citing their sources.

Once in high school, learners engage in learning that is more advanced. Students examine the plot of various stories and analyze the ways in which an author develops his or her characters. Students also compare and contrast authors and the ways in which they use of tone, setting, and word choice to develop a story. Students learn how to use the context of the story to better understand the unknown, and also become adept at utilizing print and digital resources to become better informed about literary devices.

Chalk Talk: Why Year-Long School Is Beneficial

The traditional nine-month school schedule is still far and away the most popular in school districts nationwide. However, more and more schools are looking into the possibility of switching to a year-round calendar in an effort to improve instruction and boost student retention of information. Supporters of year-round school say that it will help minimize “brain drain” that occurs during long breaks in a traditional schedule, especially over the summer break. Instead of taking infrequent and long vacations, year-round schedules have frequent, shorter breaks. For example, a school might be in session for nine weeks, with a two-week break that follows. This gives both students and teachers enough time to dive into their studies, but also gives them time off to recharge, refresh, and stay engaged in educational activities. Year-round schooling also affords students the opportunity to study subjects more in depth, and study a wider variety of subjects as well.
