Chalk Talk: Resume Do’s and Don’ts

A college resume is essentially a list of extra-curricular activities. It should be no more than one page long, and the layout should be simple and easy to scan, so that the admissions committee can utilize it as a handy reference. The student’s name, contact information (including address, phone number, and email address) should be at the top of the page, centered, and followed by the student’s GPA, also centered. The rest of the page should be broken up into sections in which activities are grouped. These should be labelled with brief, to-the-point names, some examples might be “leadership activities,” “clubs,” or “awards.” Some high school students have had work experience, and this is definitely worth including, but rarely do students have enough work experience for it to merit its own section. More likely, these experiences will be grouped in other sections.
