Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Glen Carbon District Curriculum

The schools also strive to instill and develop a rich work ethic in each student that will cause the student to see schoolwork as a top priority so that they might take responsibility for their own learning. Students are encouraged to develop higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving skills to foster a greater development of the mind. By stressing lessons with real-world applications, it is hoped that students will be able to not only apply their learning to the world around them, but will take a profound interest in their environment.

The schools encourage each student to develop worthy social skills that exclude vulgar language, inappropriate demonstrations of affection, intimidation, and fights, in order to understand accountability for one’s actions. Overall, the goal is to encourage students to strive to perform academically up to one’s greatest potential and ability. The district provide curricular and extracurricular activities to students in order to meet these needs in a safe, orderly environment.

Chalk Talk: Resume Do’s and Don’ts

A college resume is essentially a list of extra-curricular activities. It should be no more than one page long, and the layout should be simple and easy to scan, so that the admissions committee can utilize it as a handy reference. The student’s name, contact information (including address, phone number, and email address) should be at the top of the page, centered, and followed by the student’s GPA, also centered. The rest of the page should be broken up into sections in which activities are grouped. These should be labelled with brief, to-the-point names, some examples might be “leadership activities,” “clubs,” or “awards.” Some high school students have had work experience, and this is definitely worth including, but rarely do students have enough work experience for it to merit its own section. More likely, these experiences will be grouped in other sections.
