Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grafton District Curriculum
Grafton’s students learn a second language as part of their world languages studies. The curriculum includes exploration of cultures outside those in the United States. Students learn about values, traditions, and social practices of the cultures associated with the language under study. Enhanced communication skills are a central component of the curriculum, however. Learners work on an interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational level. The presentational mode helps students deliver information to groups of various sizes. By delivering information orally, students improve their language comprehension abilities, as well as their listening and speaking abilities.
The English language arts curriculum in Grafton focuses student learning on improving reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities. Learners work with various types of texts, such as short stories, fictional works, and informational texts, in order to develop the ability to read for main ideas and identify important supporting details. Students learn evaluative skills that allow them to read critically and answer questions about their readings. To facilitate improved writing skills, students learn how to construct a well-formed paragraph, as well as essays.

Chalk Talk: Why Math Skills Are Essential
Math is not just something that kids learn and use in school. Its relevance and importance to daily activities makes it a subject that is crucial for students to learn and master. There are everyday tasks that require math, such as determining a tip, ensuring there is enough money to make a purchase, and managing time. Math can be used to determine the true cost of a major purchase by calculating taxes or interest fees when using credit. Kids can also use math to improve their nutrition by counting calories or measuring ingredients when cooking. There are also the life skills students acquire in math that are so important – analysis, problem solving, and perseverance among them. Beyond that, students who study math and become good at it will themselves raise children who are good at math. Getting over the fear of not doing well in it, or any subject, means kids are much more likely to pass on positive attitudes about that subject to their own kids.
