Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grandview Heights District Curriculum

Grandview Heights’ high school English language arts curriculum focuses in part on improving students’ skills for the purposes of reading literature. Students work on developing skills that allow them to identify the key details and ideas of a literary work. This includes citing textual evidence to support an analysis of the story, as well as evaluating how the central themes of a story develop over the course of the text. There are skills learned related to the craft and structure of literature and students explore how mystery and surprise can be used to create interest in the story.

The entrepreneurship component of Grandview Heights’ financial literacy curriculum helps students develop an appreciation for the role of small business owners in driving the local, state, and national economies. Students learn about the essential characteristics of the successful entrepreneur, including having drive, determination, and knowledge of good business practices. Learners explore the scope of entrepreneurship as well, including its short- and long-term impacts on the economy.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Music Education

Students who participate in music studies reap a number of benefits. Studying music is associated with improved academic performance in school. Music students consistently show improved mathematical performance, particularly when it comes to comprehension of proportions and fractions. Additionally, students that study music in middle school and high school show a higher level of math proficiency by grade 12. On standardized tests such as the ACT, students that report taking a higher number of music courses score better. These increased scores are seen on both math and verbal measures on the test. Additionally, as the number of music courses a student takes increases, so too does their number of academic honors and awards and the frequency with which they earn A’s and B’s in their classes. As a result, music is considered by the U.S. Department of Education to be a critical component of any K-12 curriculum.
