Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hawkesbury District Curriculum
The language arts curriculum oversees the development of the reading, writing, communication, media viewing, and conducting research for young students. This wide array of critical communication skills are approached in an integrated manner so that students have an authentic learning experience in this subject. Students read and write both fiction and non-fiction and gain experiences by giving presentations and participating in discussions. The research component helps students learn how to locate and evaluate information, and how to integrate the ideas of others into their own.
Other presentation methods for student ideas and work are also a part of the curriculum. When speaking, students learn effective methods for presenting information. Speakers use tools such as technology and digital media to engage their listeners. Speakers also learn to adapt their speech to a number of contexts, from a formal presentation to an informal question-and-answer session or just participating in a group discussion.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Language Arts
The more proficient a student can read, the more he or she will understand these conventions. Likewise, the stronger a writer a student becomes, the easier time they will have expressing themselves and their ideas. In this way, students can learn the importance of reading and writing to communicate. Not only is language arts instruction valuable to students’ core academic education, but students will use these skills to learn other subjects and as tools for advancement after school. Learning how to unlock the meaning of words, and to look for the meaning within in each text, takes time. Developing a voice, both spoken and in writing, is also important in the intellectual development of any individual. Practice is of the utmost importance, and understanding the conventions of language can vastly improve students’ abilities.
