Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Herriman District Curriculum

The goal in elementary school Language Arts instruction is “comprehensive balanced literacy,” meaning that students are able to perform a variety of reading-related tasks in a variety of registers. This means as much as two hours of reading instruction and one hour of writing instruction per day in the classroom, including independent reading and group reading.

By the time students get to high school, they will be ready to meet the core curriculum guidelines of being able to work with a wide variety of texts, being able to understand the arguments in them and offer critiques of them, and being able to write in a variety of contexts for a variety of audiences. The curriculum uses a series of themes, designed to provide a context in which students can practice key skills and develop competencies in areas like using textual evidence to support an analysis of the meaning of a text.
