Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Herriman District Curriculum

The goal in elementary school Language Arts instruction is “comprehensive balanced literacy,” meaning that students are able to perform a variety of reading-related tasks in a variety of registers. This means as much as two hours of reading instruction and one hour of writing instruction per day in the classroom, including independent reading and group reading.

By the time students get to high school, they will be ready to meet the core curriculum guidelines of being able to work with a wide variety of texts, being able to understand the arguments in them and offer critiques of them, and being able to write in a variety of contexts for a variety of audiences. The curriculum uses a series of themes, designed to provide a context in which students can practice key skills and develop competencies in areas like using textual evidence to support an analysis of the meaning of a text.

Keeping Informed: Recent Herriman Educational News

  • Honoring Local Heroes - Students at Silver Crest Elementary in Herriman held an assembly to honor local veterans. Students sang patriotic songs, held a flag ceremony, and waved American flags for visiting veterans, young and old. The event was in honor of Veterans’ Day.
  • Students Help the Local Ecosystem - The Herriman High School football team and other students from Herriman joined in a cleanup effort to help renew an area near Herriman that was destroyed in a forest fire. Students helped to reseed the burned ground, in an effort to speed up the regrowth of plant cover in the area. Two thirds of the territory burned in the fire was reseeded in a day, thanks to the students’ help.
  • Defining Sportsmanship - The Herriman High girls’ swim team won accolades for their sportsmanship, after they gave up a victory in the relay that would have sent them to the state finals. Their automatic timer had malfunctioned, making it seem that they had finished first. The students all agreed that they wouldn’t want to take an unfair victory, and that they’d be cheering for the students who went on to the finals.
