Horn Lake District and Curriculum
Horn Lake Public Schools provide their students a top-notched education. They are beginning to embrace the state of Mississippi’s Core Curriculum to ensure their students are reaching the skill-level that they need to become productive citizens. The Common Core Curriculum has been designed to provide a depth of knowledge in core academics coupled with the skills and concepts students need to be prepared for future work and learning.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Horn Lake District Curriculum
In Language Arts, students begin with sight words and storybooks in the first year of school. These young students learn to recognize the words for each number up to ten, their color words, and words made up of two to four letters. When they enter second grade they learn how to use a dictionary, including the use of guide words and parts of speech. Once in high school, they discover literature from the Middle Ages and Anglo-Saxon times, including the dramas and poetry.
Math is also addressed in the beginning years Horn Lake Public Schools. Young children learn, not only to count to 100, but they also learn how to compare and describe differences between two objects by weight, height and length. By fourth grade they are able to compare their customary measurements, foot, inch, yard, mile, and compare it to the metric equivalent. They also begin to learn about lines, and 2D and 3D figures in this grade. In high school, these students learn how to measure and create these figures, as well as how to graph coordinates on a grid.

Keeping Informed: Recent Horn Lake Educational News
- MCJROTC - Each year one student is chosen to receive the Legion of Valor Ribbon. The student chosen is in the top 25% of their class, as well as being in the top 25% academically and must also demonstrate military leadership.
- Eagle Vision - The student produced program is presented on classroom televisions to keep the students and staff up to date on the events that are occurring throughout the school. Some of the clips are meant to be humorous, but others include National Honor Society Inductions.
- National Honor Society Inductions - The National Honor Society of Horn Lake High School inducted several students into the organization recently. Each of these students was chosen because of their character, scholarship, leadership and service.

Chalk Talk: How to Request Help for a Child
Once a parent realizes that they need to seek assistance for their child, the next step is to decide what to do next. The next step would be to connect with the child’s teacher to see if they might have some suggestions. Today, many teachers have email, which may be the quickest way to make this contact. When going into the meeting, it is a good idea to let the teacher know if you are looking for suggestions, or if you are asking for help. Keep an open mind during the meeting and make sure the child knows that the teacher and you are working together to assist the student. Once this foundation has been laid, the pathway is open to gaining the help that is needed.
