Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hornell District Curriculum

In Mathematics, students focus in on a small number of mathematical subjects that are taught in an intense progressive learning process. The subjects include learning numbers, addition, subtraction, and other computational skills, whole numbers operations, measurement, multiplication, division, algebraic expressions, proportional reasoning, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. These math subjects have been determined to be necessary for use in the workforce and to be ready for college.

In English and Language Arts (ELA) students learn to read, write, listen, and speak using correct English. The curriculum also uses both informational text balanced with literature to provide students with an understanding of the reading material that they will likely have to understand as adults. The development of interpretative and critical analysis skills are also fostered by the curriculum.

Keeping Informed: Recent Hornell Educational News

  • Into the Woods - Students from Hornell Junior High School and Hornell Senior High School recently participated in the production of Stephen Sondheim’s challenging musical ‘Into the Woods’. The production was directed by Tim Berardi and included 22 students in the cast. The performances took place at the Hornell Senior High School auditorium to appreciative audiences.
  • Washington Trip - Forty four students from Hornell Schools recently participated in a MOVE: DC rally in Washington, DC sponsored by the nonprofit organization Invisible Children. The rally hoped to bring public attention to mistreatment of children occurring in parts of Africa. Representatives from Invisible Children recently spoke at the school and presented a video called “How You Can Change the World.”
  • DECA Regionals - Hornell High School students recently attended the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) regionals competition and Hornell students took the three top awards. This is the sixth year the school has participated in the competition.

There are thirty different science topics to choose from including chemistry, biology, dinosaurs, earth, electricity, food, weather, weird, robots and sound.
